Improving rapidly and consistently in Jiu-Jitsu is hard.
For me, it was extra hard because I worked in shifts, and there were no morning classes in my neighborhood.
Because of that, there were weeks when I could hardly make it to a single class The few techniques I did manage to learn rarely fit together, and when I didn't use them I'd forget them. So I bought mats and started training at home when I couldn't go to the gym. I was training A LOT. Some days I had 3-4 people drop by just to drill and roll.
Still, it wasn't enough. You can have all the instructionals in the world, and you're still lacking a vital part of the recipe.
The things you lack, are most of the time the things you don't realize. I thought I was just less athletic, slower, weaker...
But that wasn't the root cause. I only found the key when I started getting guidance from my mentor.
For me, to really get to the next level, I needed structure, systems, and feedback. In other words, I needed to get a birds-eye view of my Jiu-Jitsu.
For most people, that's not something you can do by yourself. It's where having a good coach makes all the difference.
When I implemented this, suddenly, EVERY HOUR spent on the mats was doubled in value; I trained 30 hours a week but felt like I trained 60... and let me tell you, everyone noticed! It was not because I became more athletic or faster. It was because they couldn't pin me down, then they couldn't pass my guard anymore, suddenly attacks became natural because I didn't fear getting passed anymore.
People started to ask me as a 'white belt', how do you do this? or that? Do you know a counter to this move? I always started with the same answer, work on the fundamentals. Practice your escapes.
